Habitat for Humanity

As members of the Mother City , Cape Town chapter, we decided to get together as a group outside of the normal meeting.

It was suggested that instead of just having a social meeting, that we participate in something of value. It was decided that we would contribute to our community by doing some building volunteer work for Habitat for Humanity. Everyone was very eager and exited to participate and we arranged to meet on the Saturday. We arrived at Wallacedene, a township outside of Cape Town , to put up foundation walls on the second Habitat house in that area. No one has ever done this kind of volunteer work in a township / informal settlement area before, and most members were quite nervous driving in.

Within no time everyone felt a real sense of community! We were welcomed, where after we were set to hard physical work, the mixing of sand and cement.

We then proceeded with building (builders were on site to assist us) and smoothing of the built foundation walls - wow what hard work! Finishing the house felt extremely fulfilled, humbled and joyful. What a great day!

The Party at Tenterden - Home for Children

The Party at Tenterden - Home for Children The rain abated and the smiles were out!! Some 25 children, aged 7 years to 14, were treated to a special afternoon of fun, arranged by Sandy Hotz, a RE/MAX Estate Agent, who works in the area of Wynberg and surrounds.

The children, themselves, helped decorate the dining room hall which was festooned with streamers and balloons. The girls from the home started by performing a dance in appreciation of the party!

Guela Wills from Lions International played exciting games outside where there was lots of cajoling and laughter. Members of the Wynberg B N I Southern Cross chapter, together with Jill from Pestguard helped and joined in the fun.

An accomplished group of young dancers, Mo, Ezran and friends performed modern dances for the children - and to top it off, divided the children into two groups and taught them a dance, which they performed to us!! Nadia from Zip Print sponsored the posters, labels and other stationary, where after the children were divided into groups of four to design their own works of art.

The results were fantastic! In addition we supplied each child with a T-shirt and a party fare – wow, were they exited! The staff, volunteers, Sandy and the children had a fun-filled afternoon. Other sponsors were Cathy & Kevin from P A Betterbond, Pick ‘n Pay Family Store, Plumstead, Jaco van Zyl (attorney), Charmaine Swart (RE/MAX Elite) and Grant Gunston attorneys besides those mentioned above.
